Composer Kevin M. Walczyk’s Noite do Novo Nascimento (Night of the New Birth) was written for brass quintet and wind ensemble. Composed specifically for the Boston Brass, Noite do Novo Nascimento was commissioned by a consortium of university wind ensembles that include lead-consortium member Oregon State University (Christopher Chapman, director), Auburn University (Richard D. Good, director), Fullerton College (Anthony Mazzaferro, director), Kansas State University (Frank Tracz, director), and Texas Woman’s University (Carter Biggers, director). The work, featuring African-influenced folk elements of Brazilian music, including the Baiano, Baião, and Ogum, showcases the improvisational talents of Boston Brass members Jose Sibaja (trumpet), Chris Castellanos (horn), and Sam Pilafian (tuba). Boston Brass and the Oregon State University Wind Ensemble, under the direction of Christopher Chapman, premiered the work on May 24, 2017.

PERFORMANCE CONSORTIUM

Keveli Music has long been dedicated to forming consortium commissioning projects in order to give performing organizations the opportunity to participate in the commissioning process without paying large commissioning fees. This is accomplished by asking multiple members of a consortium to share the commissioning fee. Keveli Music acknowledges Dr. Christopher Chapman, who served as the consortium coordinator, the Boston Brass (the brass quintet for whom the work was composed) and the following band programs, and their directors for participating in the consortium commissioning process that brought Noite do Novo Nascimento to life:
