Deer Path Overture for concert band was commissioned by the Deer Path Middle School Band, Gina DeGregorio and Antonio J. Passaro directors. The work, composed specifically for the combined 7th and 8th grade bands, was graciously supported by a Spirit of 67 grant from the Lake Forest School District 67 in Lake Forest Illinois. The work was premiered by the commissioning organization in April, 2015 with composer Kevin M. Walczyk in attendance.

The work, whose primary melody is based on the words "Deer Path", is in a traditional ternary (overture) form with the outset A sections featuring a playful, energetic melody in E-flat Major. The slower, expressive B section continues to develop the A-section's playful tune but in a more serious tone, wending its way through rich dissonances and minor harmonies until capitulating to the final A section in E-flat Major.
